A growing Japanese startup is seeking a versatile Accounting Manager to join during an exciting early-stage phase. This role offers a unique opportunity to go beyond traditional accounting and play a key role in building the organization’s foundation, with exposure to general affairs and cross-functional operations.

Job Responsibilities:
Accounting Operations
- Establish accounting work-flow including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and bank reconciliations by collaborating with finance BPO and Finance team of Tokyo HQ
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes; prepare monthly financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow statement) for review by Tokyo HQ and consolidated financial closing.
- Oversee US payroll processing in coordination with PEO provider; ensure accurate withholding, benefits deductions, and compliance with federal, New York State, and NYC regulations
- Maintain accurate records of all financial transactions; implement and enforce internal controls appropriate for a growing startup
- Manage accounts payable: vendor onboarding, invoice processing, payment scheduling, and expense report approvals
- Monitor daily cash position and support cash flow forecasting
Compliance & Tax
- Coordinate US federal and state income tax filings with external CPA firm and Finance team of Tokyo
- Manage sales tax registration, collection, and remittance across all US states where nexus is established (e-commerce)
Systems & Process
- Own and administer accounting software (QuickBooks Online); evaluate and implement upgrades as the business scales
- Integrate accounting systems with Shopify (e-commerce revenue reconciliation), POS (retail), and payroll (PEO)
- Establish SOPs for all core accounting processes; document and train future staff as the team grows
- Partner with the PEO provider on benefits administration, annual enrollment, and employee changes
General Affairs
- Manage legal documents, ensuring compliance with internal policies
- Design and manage employee benefit programs
Qualifications:
- 6+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within a high-growth consumer products company.
- Proven ability to manage a full P&L and a track record of driving operational improvements.
- High proficiency in QuickBooks Online and advanced Excel modeling.
- Experience with financial reporting and consolidation is required.
- Experience working in a startup or early-stage environment is highly preferred
- Business-level English required; Japanese language skills are highly preferred but not mandatory
- Experience working with Japanese companies or global teams is a plus, but not required
