Accounting Director / Controller


Hybrid-Houston area

Salary: Up to $200,000 (Base, DOE)

A rapidly growing company is seeking an Accounting Director / Controller to build and lead its U.S. accounting function. This newly created role offers broad responsibility across accounting operations, financial reporting, and internal controls.

This position requires a hands-on management style (MUST). The ideal candidate is comfortable leading a team while remaining closely involved in day-to-day accounting activities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes in accordance with US GAAP
  • Oversee external audits and coordinate with auditors and tax advisors
  • Manage hands-on accounting operations and mentor accounting staff
  • Provide guidance on technical accounting matters, including M&A, impairment, hedge accounting, and derivatives
  • Strengthen internal controls and support accounting process improvements
  • Drive system enhancements and automation initiatives
  • Prepare financial reports and analysis for internal stakeholders
  • Collaborate with global and regional finance teams

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting
  • CPA (active or inactive)
  • 10+ years of accounting or financial reporting experience
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP, including complex accounting areas
  • Experience managing accounting teams
  • Hands-on management style (MUST)
  • Advanced Excel skills

Preferred / Desired Experience

  • Experience in the energy industry
  • Experience in an international or global business environment
  • Knowledge of trading-related accounting, including hedge accounting and derivatives
  • Big 4 public accounting experience (Manager level preferred)
  • Experience working with global organizations or cross-border teams
  • ERP experience (SAP, Oracle, OneStream)

Candidates with strong relevant experience will be considered even if they do not meet every requirement.
