Director, Power Business/Asset Management

Location: Houston, Texas, USA

Reports To: SVP, Power Business

Working Model: Hybrid

Compensation: $180K/base + bonus

An international energy investment and business development company that focuses on natural gas, power, and renewable energy projects in the USA is seeking a highly experienced and strategic Director at their power business department.

This role is accountable for annual profitability across all power generation assets and for elevating Return on Invested Capital (ROIC) to exceed the company’s Weighted Average Cost of Capital (WACC) within three years.

The ideal candidate brings hands-on experience managing utility-scale power generation assets, including large to mega-scale projects, with direct responsibility for financial performance, commercial contracts, and market exposure.

Key Responsibilities

1. Asset & Financial Performance Management

  • Oversee the financial performance, operational efficiency, and contractual health of power generation assets, including Solar, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), and CCGT facilities.
  • Monitor KPIs, budgets, and actual performance; lead corrective action planning to ensure annual profitability targets are met.

2. Operational Optimization

  • Identify opportunities for performance improvement at operating facilities.
  • Optimize O&M strategies, evaluate contractor performance, and recommend enhancements based on profitability analysis and benchmarking.

3. Commercial Contracting

  • Lead the review, negotiation, and execution of commercial agreements, including PPAs, tolling agreements, hedges, and other revenue contracts.
  • Ensure compliance with contract requirements and proactively manage obligations and risks.

4. Power Market Strategy & Revenue Maximization

  • Monitor supply/demand dynamics and price movements in key markets (ERCOT, PJM, Mexico).
  • Develop strategies to maximize revenue and reduce market exposure.

5. Safety & Risk Management

  • Establish and oversee safety and operational risk management frameworks.
  • Work with plant and site teams to conduct risk assessments, monitor safety KPIs, and implement mitigation measures.

6. Portfolio Strategy & Exit Analysis

  • Conduct analyses related to exit opportunities, including asset divestiture, refinancing, and restructuring.
  • Provide recommendations to senior leadership based on market conditions, valuation, and investment strategy.

7. Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with technical, legal, finance, and operations teams to support asset performance and strategic initiatives.
  • Engage external partners, advisors, and regulatory bodies as needed.

8. Leadership & Talent Development

  • Manage team performance, set business goals, and provide ongoing coaching and mentorship.
  • Build organizational capabilities aligned with long-term strategy.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience in asset management within the power generation industry (Solar, IPP, utility, energy company, etc.).
  • Strong understanding of power market structures and commercial contracting (e.g., PPAs, tolling agreements).
  • Proficiency in financial modeling, valuation (NPV/IRR), and revenue management.
