Job Title: Finance and Accounting Supervisor

Location:  Newport News VA

Salary: $80-105K/year (DOE)

Summary

This position is responsible for both the Financial (Accounting) & Administration duties and responsibilities of each separate department

Directs the financial affairs of the organization and prepares financial analysis of operations, including interim and final financial statements with supporting schedules, for the guidance of management. Finance & Administration is responsible for the company’s accounting practices. The position involves supervision over general accounting, internal & external auditing, cost accounting, and budgetary controls. Takes initiative to identify and solve problems. Demonstrates initiative and leadership. Identifies and develops ways to improve work processes, efficiency, and quality. Improve job skills, knowledge, performance, and education. Attend educational programs to keep skills current. Accepts change. Willingness to work extra hours as needed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Finance/Accounting:

·      Development, analysis, interpretation and monthly preparation of statistical and accounting information (financial statements) in order to appraise operating results in terms of profitability, performance against budget, and other matters bearing on the fiscal soundness and operating effectiveness of the organization.

·      Responsible for evaluating the performance of personnel in the Finance Department.

·      Maintains & reconciles the company’s system of accounts and keeps books and records on all company transactions and assets.

·      Coordinates and directs the preparation of the budget and financial forecasts, institutes and maintains other planning and control procedures (including the cost accounting system), and analyzes and reports variances.

·      Is responsible for tax planning and compliance with all federal, state, and local corporate, payroll, and other applicable taxes.

·      Furnishes internal reports, revises and updates reports to be more useful and efficient, and furnishes external reports as necessary.

·      Determines depreciation rates to apply to capitalized items and advises management on desirable operational adjustments due to tax revisions.

·      Evaluates and recommends insurance coverage for protection against property losses and potential liabilities.

Responsible for Accounts Payable (including weekly check runs and wire transfers), Accounts Receivable (including payment applications and deposits), & Receptionist functions, supervision & evaluation of these personnel and functions.

·      Finance has the responsibility for providing the organization and its management with the appropriate financial and operating information necessary. This individual and the accounting staff are expected to work closely with other department groups on problems involving accounting systems and financial planning.

·      Among the duties of this position are management reporting and policymaking as it pertains to the Department. In general, this individual may be looked to for technical and analytical guidance in identifying and solving problems within the functional limits of the Department.

·      Other responsibilities include seeing that company policy is carried out or complied with, assisting other departments in forecasting financial needs, accelerating cash receipts and controlling disbursements, overseeing bank balances, maintaining lines of credit and banking relationships. Establishing and maintaining credit and collection procedures, controlling profit-sharing records, and evaluating and implementing computerized accounting systems.

·      Responsible for coordination and execution of yearly financial & tax audits with outside audit firms.

Provide vision, leadership, planning, project coordination and management for the development of a cost effective department while concurrently facilitating efficient operations to meet current and future business needs.

Keeps President and Director informed of significant problems that jeopardize the achievement of objectives, and those, which are not being addressed adequately at the line management level. 

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE:

·      Degree in Accounting.

·      Skill in math, accuracy and precision, interest in business, organized, willingness to follow recommended procedures, honesty, patience, good written and oral communication skills, good people skills, team player, knowledge of EDP-oriented accounting systems.

·      Seven (7) to ten (10) years of experience in private industry

·      Bachelor’s degree in business administration, computer science or information systems or equivalent experience.

·      Effective leadership skills that can energize multi-disciplined work teams to respond to business needs; strong analytical problem-solving and conceptual skills.

·      Strong project management skills with experience in organizing, planning and executing large scale projects from the envisioning stage through to implementation, involving internal personnel, contractors and vendors.

·      Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills and excellent human resource management skills.
