Common Types of Work Visas

Working in North America requires a valid work visa. The type of visa you can obtain will depend on your education, work experience, area of expertise, and skills. In the U.S., these are some of the most common visas held by employees of Japan-based companies operating locally.

H-1B visa

A “specialty occupation” visa, generally for those with a bachelor’s degree or higher, allowing them to work in professional fields.

L visa

An “intra-company transferee” visa for individuals who have worked for at least one year within the past three years at a related company outside the U.S.

E-1 visa

A “treaty trader/investor” visa available under the trade agreement between Japan and the United States.

E-2 visa

An “investor visa” granted to individuals who invest in the United States.
