What Is Optional Practical Training (OPT)?
OPT gives you the chance to turn your studies into real-world experience. After completing an eligible program such as a vocational school, two-year college, university, graduate school, or a nine-month or longer certificate, you can work full-time in the U.S. for up to 12 months, with extended options for certain majors.
OPT positions must be connected to your field of study. For details on application timelines and steps, your school’s International Student Office is the best place to start.
OPT approval from U.S. immigration is required, and you can only begin working once your Employment Authorization Document (EAD) card arrives.
* Graduates in certain majors may qualify for the STEM OPT Extension, adding up to 24 months to the standard 12-month OPT period, for a total of up to three years of work in the U.S.
